Most people don’t realize that certain professions don’t just attract neurodiverse individuals—they actually help them thrive! 🚀 One surprising career where neurodiversity, especially ADHD and dyslexia, can be a massive asset is firefighting.
In high-pressure situations that require quick thinking, fast processing, and situational awareness, neurodiverse minds excel. In fact, studies suggest that 35%+ of firefighters are neurodiverse. The very traits that some label as challenges can become superpowers in the right career!

So, my Different Thinker Motivational Moment this week is about the fact that most people don’t realize that there are particular professions that really don’t just draw the neurodiverse but actually help a neurodiverse person not just thrive but provide incredible access for their neurodiversities to become huge assets.
One of those particular careers is actually firefighting. At this point, they believe about 35-plus percent of most firefighters are actually neurodiverse—ADHD, dyslexic, or a combination of those things. And you know what? That, in particular, the ADHD, is a huge gift because, in those situations where they need to think fast, process fast, take in a lot of data, look around, and assess situations quickly, guess what’s a great skill to have? Yeah, a whole bunch of ADHD!
So, this is a Different Thinker reminder that sometimes something that other people have labeled as “not that great,” in the right career, is absolutely 100% what is necessary.
So, if you are in any of those careers or thinking about those careers, I’m going to tell you—your different thinking is a huge gift.
I’m JoyGenea, International Neurodiversity Coach. Good luck in finding your amazing space to use all of your skills.
