What is Gamification and Why it Supports 3-D Thinkers

I have a few good friends to thank for helping me stumble into the brilliance of gamification. One is a long-time friend, gamer, and my former podcast partner. The other is a friend and coach who has been exploring gamification and software engineering to build a better system for himself and others. I also have to thank the many clients I work with who are gamers. Let’s just say that most of them enjoy video games and role-playing games. I have not played video games more than once or twice before. I have never built up that skill. I have two brothers that are great at video games and role-playing games. So, I have been around it. Once my friend introduced me to the book 10,000 Hours of Play by Yu-Kai Chou I realized this was the missing link for me and for many other creative, three-dimensional thinkers. A three dimensional plus system that connects the dots between productivity, system, future goals, purpose, and to do lists. I don’t believe that any of this would have been possible without artificial intelligence (AI). That is what makes the system reach the capacity needed to really contain all of the things the leaders I am working with are up to and helping them to know what the next best-value-task to work on is.

It’s rooted in the principles of 10,000 Hours of Play by Yu-Kai Chou and Marc Diaz and aligns with modern leadership thinking. I am currently learning from one of the authors, he is leading in a group, how to best implement this into my life and other people’s lives.

While the concept of using game-like rewards is over a century old, the actual term “gamification” was first coined in 2002 by Nick Pelling.

Concepts vs. The Term

It is helpful to distinguish between the word and the practice. Long before the word “gamification” existed, organizations were already using its principles:

  • 1896: S&H Green Stamps (a loyalty program where customers collected stamps for rewards).
  • 1908: The Boy Scouts introduced merit badges to motivate and track achievement.
  • 1981: American Airlines launched the first frequent flier program, essentially “gamifying” travel.

There are a ton more examples. The concept isn’t new, the application to life on a big picture and the tools to do that are new.

Today, it is a sophisticated discipline centered on behavioral psychology and AI-driven personalization.

Examples from Education and Corporations in 2026 – created by Gemini AI

Here is how gamification is being used across education and corporate training today.

  1. Education: The Era of “Gamification 2.0”

In modern classrooms, gamification is no longer a “bolt-on” feature; it is woven into the curriculum to foster deep engagement and curiosity.

  • AI-Driven Personalization: Current platforms use AI to adjust difficulty in real-time. If a student masters a math concept quickly, the system “levels up” the challenge immediately; if they struggle, it provides a “micro-quest” to reinforce the basics.
  • Narrative-Driven Learning: Rather than just “doing homework,” students participate in long-term narratives. For example, a history class might be framed as a “Time Travel Agency” where students “unlock” eras by solving primary-source puzzles.
  • Immersive Simulations (AR/VR): Students now use AR to turn their physical classrooms into interactive labs. In 2026, tools like Wayground (formerly Quizizz) and Classcraft have integrated AR to allow students to “see” chemical reactions or historical battles in 3D.

Key Tools:

  • Wayground: Immersive AI-integrated lessons used by over half of U.S. schools.
  • Duolingo: Now expanded beyond languages into gamified music, math, and chess.
  • Blooket/Gimkit: High-energy classroom “game shows” that provide teachers with real-time data tracking.

  1. Corporate Training: Learning in the “Flow of Work”

In the corporate world, gamification is used to solve the “engagement gap,” specifically for mandatory training that employees often find tedious.

  • Micro-Missions: Instead of hour-long seminars, companies use 5-minute “missions” delivered via mobile. Completing a mission on “Data Privacy” might unlock a “Security Specialist” badge that carries real-world weight in performance reviews.
  • Sales Performance & Culture: Platforms like Spinify and SalesScreen turn sales targets into live competitions. Teams hit their goals up to 78% faster by using real-time leaderboards and “boss battles” (team-based challenges).
  • Safe-to-Fail Simulations: VR is used to gamify high-stakes training. For example, a technician might “play” a simulation of a factory floor emergency, earning points for speed and accuracy without any real-world risk.

Key Tools:

  • Centrical: Uses “gamified micro-learning” to keep frontline workers engaged daily.
  • Disco / Circle: Platforms used to build gamified learning communities where peer recognition is the primary reward.
  • Ambition: Integrates with CRMs (like Salesforce) to turn daily tasks into a “fantasy sports” style league for employees.

The Impact (2026 Statistics)

Metric  Non-Gamified  Gamified (2026)
Course Completion Rates  ~25%  ~90%
Knowledge Retention  Baseline  +22% Improvement
Employee Motivation  Low  90% feel more motivated

The Big Shift: Meaning Over Mechanics

The most significant trend in is the move away from “superficial” rewards. Designers now focus on intrinsic motivation, giving the learner a sense of autonomy, mastery, and purpose. The “points” are no longer the goal; they are simply the feedback that tells the person they are growing.

Where I am Seeing Gamification Transform Leadership and Lives (from Coach JoyGenea)

Gamification is the art of turning boring stuff into engaging experiences, like turning chores into a game. For high processing three-dimensional thinkers, sometimes labeled as neurodiverse (ADHD, autism, dyslexia, etc.), it can help increase focus, find motivation, and bring uncommon abilities to the forefront. When we play life like a game, as taught in 10,000 Hours of Play, we unlock new levels of leadership, creativity, and success.

What is Gamification for Results Anyway?

In Simple Terms:

Gamification means using game-thinking in real life everyday situations for results. It’s not about playing Candy Crush at work. It’s about taking the fun, challenge, and motivation from games and applying it to everyday life.

Examples:

  • Earning points for completing tasks
  • Turning goals into quests
  • Having allies instead of just coworkers
  • Building skills like leveling up in a game
  • Points for failing

As 10,000 Hours of Play says: “The only way to lose is by not playing.”

Gamification Offers

  • Clear rules and rewards
  • Freedom to fail safely
  • Visible progress
  • A sense of control and purpose

It matches how many 3D, creative, idea people naturally think and thrive.

From NPC to Hero: Leading Through Play

Yu-Kai Chou says we’re either living like NPCs (non-playable characters) or as the hero of our own journey.

High creative, idea driven founders like Elon Musk and Richard Branson didn’t follow the “normal” game of life. They designed their own game.

In the 10K HP model, there are six steps to design your Hero Journey:

  1. Game – What mission excites you?

  2. Attributes – What are your unique talents?

  3. Role – What identity empowers you?

  4. Skills – What crafts can you master?

  5. Alliances – Who’s on your team?

  6. Quests – What milestones will you conquer?

Gamification gives leaders a way to reframe their path with energy, clarity, and motivation.

How Companies Win When Leaders Play Differently

When leaders play to their strengths, companies win:

  • Better innovation
  • Greater resilience
  • Deeper empathy for their team and customers

And when companies adopt gamified systems:

  • Employees are more motivated
  • Teams become collaborative guilds, not silos
  • Leaders focus on progress, not perfection

Gamification isn’t just play, it’s the connection of external results to intrinsic personal operations.

Call to Action

If you’re a creative, idea generating, three dimensional thinker, you are already a gamer. That is what I have learned. I have been playing life like a game the whole time and didn’t realize the rules or how to get the most happiness out of it all. It’s time to stop “masking” and start designing.

Ask yourself:

  • What’s my game?
  • What attributes make me powerful?
  • What if I measured progress in joy, not just productivity?

I am coaching and teaching leaders how to start the the10K HP journey. Your brain will thank you.

“We don’t quit games because they’re hard. We quit life because it’s boring.”

Yu-Kai Chou, 10,000 Hours of Play

It’s time to flip the script. It’s time to play a better game.

So, this week’s blog article, all of that is about 10K HP, which is 10,000 hours of play, and it’s gamification. I had the privilege of knowing somebody who knew somebody who was going to be engaged with the person that wrote that book, actually both of the authors of that book, Yu-Kai Chou and Mark Diaz, and I was so lucky to have access to that, and I realized I needed to jump on that opportunity. Little did I know when I started how transformative that was going to be for me. Not being a video game player, not being a role game player, which by the way everybody else in my like- my siblings are, and I can really see now why they love it, and why they’re participating in it. So, I, anyway, started participating and doing um some coaching with them. They’re have, doing some group types of things and teaching us about gamification, and why I’m sharing all of that, you’re like why do we care, because what I’m recognizing is when you can take the pieces and elements that are used to build an incredible video game, when you can take those pieces and actually apply them to a person’s life, which is really what I’m doing right now, is taking that system which is fairly complicated, and having an easy way of actually implementing it into someone’s life, it is creating incredible results because now there’s this connection to the intrinsic, intrinsic part of them- the inside part of them. The why they’re getting up in the morning, why they’re doing things, and it’s attaching it to that really boring productivity list, that really boring task list, that- those emails that you’re answering, all of that now has purpose and meaning and you can measure how it’s leading you towards your end goals, which for so many people that are 3D thinkers, that are multi-layered thinkers, and huge connectors, there’s just not been systems available that really do that, to help make that productivity so easy.
So, in my article I talk about this, but I also talk about how gamification, how it’s moving along, how it’s being applied in 2026, how it’s showing up in leadership, in businesses, in a very different way, and how it’s creating results that have 90 percent improvement in- up to right, let’s be real haha- up to 90% improvement in some areas that can’t be overlooked. That really needs to be acknowledged and looked at, so I feel like I’m on the forefront of learning some incredible things. It’s been around for centuries. It’s just relabeled in some ways and in this, at this time and space, it is one of the most powerful tools I’m finding for, like I said, 3D, high idea, high creative individuals. It’s just so anchoring and just and so easily measured, and I highly recommend you read the article, and I would love like, I mean really really love to have some conversations about how this might be a system for you to figure out how to customize towards your goals, and towards what you wanna make happen. Man I’m gushing. I’m trying to keep it all contained. I’m trying to keep it contained, ’cause I really wanna just blurt out like, you just do this, and it’s so easy, but that’s not how it works. You actually, there is some effort into this, and it definitely allows you space and Grace for the growth that’s going to happen, and that part’s really exciting, but more than anything, for me having tried oh my gosh, just about every system out there, I know, I know me. I know how I operate. I know how I can get the best results working within this 10 k system that Yu-Kai Chou has put out there and mapped so effort- you know with so much effort and worked with Mark Diaz to create a really interesting book. It’s just been incredible to learn about gamification.
So, this is just my intro; if you’ve not heard of gamification, now you are hearing of gamification. Recognize that it is now being yanked out of the marketing realm and the business realm, and particularly video game realm, and actually being truly applied contextually into people’s lives and into additional spaces outside of games, and it’s creating really great results with not feeling like you’re being pushed or pulled into something, with really just wanting to engage, and that’s such a different thing.
So, I’m JoyGenea, Unconventional leadership coach, international neurodiversity coach, 3d thinker, high creative, high idea person who is finally finding a solution that has legs for this type of thinking process, and I’m excited to talk about it. So, if you have questions, comments, want to learn more, I would love to share that with you, and if you want to pick up Yu-Kai Chou and Mark Diaz’s book, I highly recommend you go over to Amazon and get the book, and start reading up and thinking about how having that and the software like in your life could be incredible, and what kind of results might actually come from that. Awesome chatting with you. Thank you. Leave your comments, like, all those fabulous things, share, all those types of things, and yeah, you’ll be hearing a lot more about this in the future. Bye now.
