We all have preferences. Why can’t we communicate about accommodations like we do about our preferences?

Hi, I’m JoyGenea, international neurodiversity coach and as we talk about neurodiversities, remember, dyslexia, ADHD, Autism, and then a rainbow of other labels which actually just apply to a whole bunch of traits. I’m talking about computer keyboards this week, and I’m talking about them in a way and metaphor of talking about preferences over accommodations and what exactly do you, when I say ‘preferences’ and when I talk about an accommodation, what do you kind of feel or see is the difference in that, because a lot of times as neurodiverse we are asked to ask other people to use the term accommodations. When we talk about schooling it’s always ‘You know, well what kind of accommodations does, you know, your child need?’ What if we instead said, ‘What preferences does your child have for learning this information? What preferences does that person have when it comes to sending emails?’ Maybe it’s less about an accommodation and more about a preference.
So, next time you’re sitting down at your computer using your keyboard, if you work in an office I highly recommend you look at everybody’s keyboard and recognize that that is one of the most diverse items in office spaces quite often is the keyboard, the keyboard and the mouse, because guess what, everybody almost everybody has a preference to what is the right mouse for them, what is the right keyboard for them and there are a bunch of variables when it comes to that and so it is a great way to be thinking about preferences over accommodations, because maybe when we’re asking for things to just be a little bit different, it is about, ‘I prefer to do this in this manner, and I’m more productive, and I will create greater results for all of us, if we just make a small tweak, if we just move this in a little bit of a different direction.
So, I’m JoyGenea, international neurodiversity coach. I want you to think about preferences, accommodations. They are different. They are asking for some different out on my blog, otherwise if I don’t see you that way, I hope to see you some other time and I have a chance to maybe coach you. I’m JoyGenea. Have a great week. Bye.
